Aquatint Step Etch

Aquatint Step Etch  | Sunday 27th th March 2022 | 10 am to 5 pm

Course Fee £85

This one-day course will introduce aquatint, an etching process which enables the printmaker to create a wide ranging and experimental marks, forms and effects in the printed outcome; from very subtle to rich dark tones.

Students will be introduced to the techniques and processes of tonal etching using the traditional aquatint method of applying and fixing of rosin aquatint to a plate before stage in an acid mordant to build up a tonal image.

Working with pre- prepared zinc plates, students will learn how to translate and transfer their design to the plate using stop-out methods and safely etch in Saline Sulphate. Following etching and proofing, images may be developed further using drypoint and burnishing. Working with black and coloured ink, students will create their own small edition of prints.

This course is especially recommended for those who have completed the Introduction to Line Etching * course or those with some previous experience of intaglio techniques and are looking to explore and develop how they work with tone as part of their practice.

* If you have completed the Introduction to Line Etching, or have a line-etched zinc plate you are encouraged to bring this along and develop the plate further using the aquatint technique.
