Suzie Brown at The View

Image by Joe Low © 2011

Suzie Brown sent us this superb photograph of her installation at Winchester’s View Gallery at the bottom of the High Street. The View is managed by Winchester City Council and has been running for a few years now attracting work from a range of artists, designers and craftmakers. However, the venue itself is now going to be converted in to something new and Winchester Council are looking around for another possible ‘View’.

These pieces were created at Badger Press, where Suzie will be teaching a Foil and Flock Weekend on 9 & 10 April. At the time of writing there is just one space left. We hope to be able to tempt Suzie to teach some more courses during the year, so stay tuned for details.

Extra* Screenprinting Dates

Due to demand we’re adding a few more screen printing days, the first of these on Saturday 05 March will be hosted by Rob Luckins who has kindly stepped in to help us out. Rob is an experienced printmaker currently teaching at schools and colleges locally, and enjoying time working on his own projects at Badger Press.

Students will learn a variety of stencil methods and the use of photosensitive emulsion to create images that originate from hand-drawn, photographic or digital starting points. Using photographic or hand-drawn images as a source of inspiration for their work, students will learn to prepare their images and expose their screens, pulling prints and learning to register colour. The perfect introduction to screen printing, helping people to create images on paper and textiles, and a useful refresher for those already familiar with the process.

We thrilled to introduce artist and designer Suzie Brown who will be teaching some new teachniques over the weekend 9 & 10 April. Students will be creating metallic and textured surfaces using foil and flock paper with water based pigment printing on fabric. This course is ideal for those wanting to create their own products or bring these techniques to their art and design work. It promises to be an exciting weekend, places are limited to six people, so make sure to book early and take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.

Courses for New Year and Spring 2011

Emails are heading over as we speak and we’ve got a packed calendar of new courses ready for the new year and into the spring. We’d like to encourage those who haven’t previously strayed far from their chosen print method to try something new and we’d particularly like to encourage illustrators to explore etching. With that in mind Kirstie Larsen will be bringing us two days of etching and ideas across the term, we hope some of our contemporary illustrators and screenprinters will take up the challenge.

Elsewhere we have screenprinting, relief, digital days and activities for all. We will be updating the site with more news and we’ve left some dates free so that this time round we can react to the demand and whittle down some of the waiting lists, with this in mind we’ll be asking you to suggest ideas, talk to us about your requirements and we would like to create more groups within Badger Press where you can develop your work in an open and supportive way.

The newsletter is available to Download here – Spring 2011 Badger Press. For those needing extra copies by post, please email us.

Wood Engraving Day

A productive day at Badger Press learning Wood Engraving with our eminent tutor Kate Dicker. The group looked at a variety of techniques and produced a wide range of work. Heather Mason Allen was kind enough to leave her comments:

“At the Badger Press there is a welcoming and easy going atmosphere.  I found the Wood Engraving course very well run; the organised yet relaxed environment of the workshop makes for a productive learning experience.  The Badger Press is an excellent resource for established and aspiring printmakers and an asset for the local art community.” Heather Mason-Allen

We’re looking forward to running a weekend session in Wood Engraving over the weekend of the 16th and 17th October, where students will be able to spend more time, we’ll be welcoming those new to the process and those looking to expand of their previous understanding and continue with their work.

Print Gocco!

Many thanks to all who attended our wonderful Print Gocco Day, we certainly had a busy studio, and brilliant creations from all our guests, including Simon Dovar who made his own Badger Press inspired creation. Once the designs had been finalised, the printing began and we couldn’t believe the speed with which these little machines work. The workshop went really well and it was a real treat to see the press in action. Many thanks to Emma Hughes and Andrew Groves who helped everyone make their cards.

These simple printing presses come from Japan where they were common amongst families for making invitations and greetings cards, apparently at one stage one in three families had one. However, the cost of making the consumables and the drop in repeat sales meant that Riso the manufacturer, halted production. These days they can be found on ebay and are highly sought after and have become a world wide hit with craftmakers and designers. We’re hoping to run another workshop again sometime, so keep an eye out. In the meantime, why don’t you join the campaign to Save Gocco!

We also found the original VHS video you get in the box, enjoy the tutorial below. Arigatou gozaimasu!
